Recognizing OGSMs
What is an OGSM?
An OGSM is a powerful framework that connects a company’s long-term vision to the everyday actions we take. Click each component below to learn more.
Objective: Where we’re going
The Objective is the qualitative, aspirational statement that describes what the organization wants to achieve. It sets the direction and inspires the team. It should be ambitious but understandable.
Example: “Become the most trusted provider of sustainable packaging in Europe.”
Goals: What success looks like
Goals are the numbers. They are the specific, measurable targets that tell us we have successfully achieved our Objective. Think of them as the scoreboard. Good Goals are always SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
Example: “Achieve a 40% market share in the sustainable packaging sector by Q4 2026.”
Strategies: How we’ll succeed
Strategies are the choices we make and the key areas of focus that will help us achieve our Goals. They describe *how* we will allocate our resources. There are usually 3-5 key strategies.
Examples: 1) “Innovate our product line with next-generation biodegradable materials.” 2) “Build strategic partnerships with major European distributors.”
Measures/Actions: What we’ll do to get there
This is where the plan becomes reality. Measures are the KPIs that track the progress of our Strategies. Actions are the specific projects and tasks we will execute. As a Yellow Belt, you will often be responsible for delivering these actions.
Example Measure: “Launch 3 new product SKUs by Q2.”
Example Action: “Finalize the Q1 supplier agreement for new polymer materials.”
It’s not just a task list.
It’s easy to confuse an OGSM with other business documents. An OGSM is unique because it connects the high-level vision directly to the day-to-day work. Unlike a simple task list or a KPI tree, it provides the *context* and *why* behind every action. It is a story, not just a list.
